2020 is over with a massive sigh of relief! Even though the consequences of 2020 are still with us, we have a sense of hope for the new year. It’s a new beginning. 2021 is a new chapter in which the pages are waiting to be written.
When we think about goals, a few significant points seem to hit a lot of our resolutions.
- Lose weight
- Eat Better
- Love ourselves more
- Spend more time with God
I have to admit these are all on my list, although I tend to be more specific. For example, I know exactly how much weight I want to lose, how many books I want to read this year, and the amount of time I’m committing to spending with God each day. All of my goals this year are SMART goals. They are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-based. SMART goals will help me stay on top of my goals for the year, and it sets me up to be more realistic about my goals, which improves my chances of success.
I’m adding something a little different to my New Year’s Resolutions in addition to these common goals. I’m looking back at 2020 and thinking about behavior or responses I wish I would have done differently. I want to take a close look at my failures because we have the greatest opportunity to grow when we fail. Is there anything you wish you would have done differently in 2020? Are there areas that involve personal behavior that you would like to improve in your life? These might seem childish and immature, but these are areas I am committing to work on this year…
- Don’t respond to situations when emotional (all yah gals no exactly what I’m referring to). Calm down and then reevaluate the situation 24-48 hours later.
- Don’t worry about false accusations. If people believe lies about you, they were probably never your friends. Plus, they have every right to think what they want, and I don’t need to demand justice.
- Justice is God’s to handle, not mine.
- Don’t let anyone devalue how God made me. I am His creation, and I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
- Stop trying to fix things, pray, and let God fix them. “Sometimes doing nothing often leads to the very best of something.” – Winnie the Pooh
- Keep my mouth shut. Let the chain of gossip end with me.
- Don’t chase after people to be in my life. If they want to be there, they will be there.
- Pray for all things!
- Lead with love always. Do not criticize or speak negatively about anyone.
“Sometimes doing nothing often leads to the very best of something.”
Winnie the Pooh
I plan to write my resolutions out once every week to remind myself where I’m going in 2021. This year I want to focus on keeping the promises I’ve made to myself on January 1. Regardless of what this year brings, these resolutions can be applied in that journey. Here’s to the next chapter in all of our lives!
